Riverside, CA Sports Teams
Being such a large city, Riverside, CA is home to many teams of various sports, with the most popular being soccer, basketball and baseball – much like the rest of the US. School and college sports in the area typically include soccer, football, baseball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball; though wrestling, golf, and field hockey are also represented by many schools.
Below are a few past and present notable teams originating from the city, both professional and college-based, with a short history of their players and successes.
Riverside, CA Pilots
This now-folded minor league baseball team were a high-A class team that played in the California League in Riverside between 1993 and 1995. Just before the 1996 season, the Pilots folded due to poor attendance and became the Lancaster JetHawks, moving out of Riverside.
Notable players included José Cruz, Jr., Ryan Franklin and Derek Lowe, who are now all retired from the game. For a short time, comedian Billy Crystal once owned the Pilots.
Deportivo Coras USA
The Deportiva Coras USA are a men’s professional soccer team based in Riverside, currently competing in the National Premier Soccer League, in the 4th division. The club is owned by Robert Lopez-Guardado, and the Deportiva Coras have strong relationships with many local universities and colleges to develop player education both on and off the pitch – they state that education is essential for all players under 21 years of age.
The club began as an amateur team in 1966, before becoming a part of the Belvedere Soccer League in LA. They won two championships consecutively in 1967 and ’68. From there, they joined the California League, and then the So-Cal Premier League. They most recently played in the National Premier Soccer League in 2015.
UC Riverside Highlanders
The Highlanders are a men’s basketball team who represent the University of California, Riverside. The Highlanders currently play in the Big West Conference. The squad has been coached by Dennis Cutts since 2013, and the current assistant coaches are Justin Bell, Will Kimble and Keith Wilkinson.

The University is also home to a whole host of other sports, both men and women’s, including cross country, soccer, and baseball. Just last month in October 2017, the UC Riverside Women’s Cross Country took 4th place in the 2017 Big West Championships.
Alongside these big sports teams, there’s plenty of fun sports clubs and centers to visit in the city for both children and adults. GLO Mini Golf is an indoor mini golf center in which you play in the dark, lit up with glowing neon and UV lights – it’s a hit with kids and a perfect location for birthday parties!
As well as this, the city has a public ice rink, Ice Town, that you can visit for fun sessions and hosts ice skating lessons. The center has two separate rinks for visitors and for sports leagues, including figure skating and hockey. You can sign up to join in the rookie league and grow from there.
