Professional Organizations in San Francisco, CA
The San Francisco 49ers were one of the first professional sports franchises on the West Coast, getting their start in 1946. Their namesake is derived from the thousands of people who flocked to the area in 1849 following the discovery of gold in 1848. They became a part of the newly formed National Football League in 1950. They had varied success in the early years, but they really hit their stride in the 1980’s. From 1981-1994 they won five Super Bowl titles with the help of stars like Joe Montana and Jerry Rice. In 2013, they built a new Stadium in Santa Clara where they still play to this day just 45 miles outside of the city.
The San Francisco Giants are a Major League Baseball team that was originally based in New York known as the New York Gothams in 1883. They changed to the New York Giants and eventually moved to San Francisco, CA in 1958. The franchise has earned the fourth most World Series Championships with eight. They have recently been quite successful with three World Series wins in the past seven years. The franchise boasts the most hall of fame members in professional baseball. They currently play at AT&T Park very close to the Bay with a very scenic view.
The Golden State Warriors are a National Basketball Association team that was originally located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and known as the Philadelphia Warriors in 1946. In 1962 they transitioned to the San Francisco Warriors and moved to the Bay Area. In 1971 the name changed yet again to become the Golden State Warriors to become more representative of the state as a whole. The Golden State Warriors currently play in Oakland which is just across the Bay Bridge from where the SF Giants play. The franchise has won five NBA championships, including the most recent one being in 2017. Their success has earned them several NBA records, including most wins in a season and best postseason. The team is expected to return to playing in the heart of the city in time for the 2018-2019 season with the construction of a new arena.
Soccer in San Francisco, CA
The city doesn’t leave out soccer as they host the minor league team known as the San Francisco Deltas. Soccer fans can catch this team playing at Kezar Stadium. Amateur soccer is quite pervasive in the area as well with the SF Soccer Football League containing 40 teams in four different divisions for men. In addition, there is the Golden Gate Women’s Soccer League which hosts over 30 teams. There is also the SF City Football Club which is a supporter-owned amateur team that plays in the Premier Development League.
