Sports Teams and Leagues of Santa Ana, CA
In Santa Ana, CA – it is really the college and high school athletic leagues and sports which dominate. Here we’re going to introduce you to a selection of Santa Ana’s leagues, and the most interesting teams which play within them.
The Golden West League in Santa Ana, CA
The Golden West League is a high school athletic league and part of the California Interscholastic Federation, Southern Section. Members of the league span schools across Orange County.
Although students from Santa Ana are currently excelling in their track and field, with three students currently sitting at the top of the leader board for their 3 miles cross country times, people are much more enthusiastic about the high school American Football. In the case of the Saints, there’s good reason.
• Santa Ana High School Saints
After an astonishing 2016 season, the Saints have never looked better. Last season they got to the CIF-SS Division 13 championship game, and even though they suffered a loss to Rancho Christian, the season was still the best in the team’s history.
Only a few years early even getting to that final seemed an impossibility; in the 2013 season, the Saints were 0-10. It seems the hiring of Coach Charlie TeGantvoort in 2014 has really helped the Saints grow from strength to strength. There’s a determination from TeGantvoort that the 2016 season wasn’t a one-off and he intends to carry the Saints to football domination.
With players like Leo Bucio, described as the best defensive player in the league, and Allen Pachero, who made eight touchdowns last season, the Saints look like they could see even greater successes in the 2017 season. After a victory over Orange on the 27th October, and being the only ones in Golden West to be undefeated so far this season, they are nearly league title champions- keep your eyes peeled for great things in the Championship!
The Orange League in CA
The Orange League is another high school athletic group in the area. Unlike the Golden West League, it predominantly covers Santa Ana and doesn’t extend much further. Incorporating athletics such as swimming, where the Santa Ana Valley team has gained success in the past, it is their football teams which capture more devotion.
• Santa Ana Valley Falcons
The Falcons are The Orange League’s most popular high school football team, and are contenders for the title of this year’s season; but they really have their work cut out. Last year’s winner’s Katella are doing everything in their power to hold onto the top spot. After losing to Savannah, the Falcons are not in the strong place they seemed to be at the beginning of the season.
They do have one great asset, however: Malcom Wesley. Wesley is a striking offensive player, and the linchpin of the Falcons’ offence. In the opener of the season Wesley ran 444-purpose yards and scored six touchdowns. His talents aren’t limited to football alone: Wesley is an excellent track and field athlete who ranks eighth country best for the long jump. Coach Larry Mohr expects strong interest from college recruiters.
The College Dons
The Athletics department of Santa Ana College includes basketball, volleyball, football, soccer, swimming, track and field, and wrestling. It’s been quite a while since the Dons have claimed a national championship: that was for football in 2004. Their most recent trophies come from conference championships in basketball and baseball in 2014. A good year for the Dons.
The Winds FC
Unlike the rest of the teams on this list, the Winds aren’t a college or high school team but a professional soccer team. The winds don’t play soccer exactly, but futbol; their game has a little Latin flavor. The Winds play in the United Premier Soccer League, which the owner of the team founded and is also based in Santa Ana, CA. This year has been good to the Winds as they’ve reached the 2017 Cal South State Cup quarterfinals, and the second round of the 2017 U.S. Open Cup qualifying.
