Stockton Heat is arguably the biggest professional sporting team to reside in the city. The Heat, who call Stockton Arena its home (which seats 10,000 people), plays in the minor league American Hockey League (AHL). They began playing in the 2015 – 2016 season and are affiliated with the Canadian Calgary Flames, who play in the National Hockey League (NHL). The Heat’s colors are black, red, yellow and white.
The Heat replaced ECHL’s Stockton Thunder – a minor ice hockey team that was in play from 2005 – 2015 before being purchased by the Calgary Flames and relocating to Glens Falls, New York.
Baseball is a huge sport in California and it was introduced to the city in the 1860's. The Stockton Ports, founded in 1941, play professional minor league baseball in the Class A of the North Division (Advanced California League). The Ports are an integral part of the rich history of the city, and their name derives from the famous port in the city – the state’s only inland port – which was famous for trading in the late 19th century/early 20th century. Their success is legendary, with 11 wins under their belt (more than any other in the league), and Banner Island Ballpark is where they call home. The Ports are affiliated with professional baseball team Oakland Athletics, based in Oakland, CA.
The Pacific Tigers are the representatives of the University of the Pacific (UOP), located in Stockton, CA, and are a men’s and women’s basketball team in NCAA Division 1 (part of the West Coast Conference). UOP also sponsors men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports including baseball, soccer, golf (men’s), swimming, tennis, water polo, softball (women’s), field hockey (women’s), track and field (women’s) beach volleyball (women’s) and cross country (women’s). In 1995, after 77 years of competition, the Pacific Tigers ended its football program.
San Joaquin Delta College Athletics
San Joaquin Delta College is a community college department that boasts an array of sports and athletics, both male and female, including soccer, swimming, baseball, basketball, wrestling and volleyball. One of the biggest teams to come out of San Joaquin Delta College is the Mustangs – a football team who play in the Big 8 Conference in California.
Some athletic associations haven’t had such a long run, such as the California Sunbirds, who play women’s professional softball. They were one of the founding teams of the National Pro Fastpitch in 2004, but folded in 2005 shortly after the season ended.
The city has 12 leagues of baseball teams in the city in its District 8 Little League. It also has many softball leagues including Port City Softball League and Girls Softball Association.
