The Amusing History of Anaheim, CA
Anaheim, CA is so much more than its Disney roots. The city dates back to long before the claim that Walt Disney put the city on the map in 1955. The city was actually founded by German immigrants almost 100 years before Walt Disney built his famed theme park there. There is a lot of amusing and fascinating history to this little city in California. Located roughly 25 miles south of Los Angeles, what started as a settlement of 50 German families in the late 1800’s has since developed into the sprawling, fascinating, and thriving city that it is today.
Anaheim, CA Started as a Vineyard
In 1857, a group of German immigrants first settled what was known as the Anaheim colony. They named the community after two German phrases- “anna” which is in reference to the Santa Ana River, and “heim,” which means “home.” With this new name, they settled their home near the Santa Ana River, and thus began the city’s first amusing claim to fame.
The German settlers planted vineyards, and the city quickly became an agricultural mecca for wine grapes. From 1857 to 1870, the city was the wine capital of the state. In 1870, a blight wiped out the settlers’ vineyards, and their reign as the wine capital of California came to an abrupt end. Oranges quickly took over as the primary source of agriculture in the city.
Anaheim, CA Has Some Quirky Museums
Since there are so many different aspects to what Anaheim is today, there are definitely some amusing museums that have cropped up over the years. From Muzeo, to the Kidseum, to the always interesting Hobby City Doll and Toy Museum, there is never a shortage of strange and funny museums in Anaheim. The most amusing of them all, perhaps, is the Hobby City Doll and Toy Museum. While Muzeo boasts the history of the city, the Hobby City Doll and Toy Museum boasts more than 6,000 unique collectible toys and dolls all situated in chronological order.
It is the Wealthiest City in Orange County
The German immigrants who settled the city in 1857 probably never imagined that their small colony would, once officially incorporated, quickly become the wealthiest city in all of Orange County. With Disneyland, in addition to Anaheim Stadium and The Anaheim Convention Center, the economy of what was once a small vineyard has exploded. The city has more than $1 billion in assets, and their baseball team the Angels alone brings in more than 3.9 million visitors every year.
Anaheim, California is a quirky, amusing city that actually has a lot of history behind the city that it has become today. What started as a modest German settlement has since become a booming economy that brings in millions of tourists every year. In recent years, the city has only grown more and more. In 1950, the population of the city was less than 15,000, and today there are over 300,000 people who live in the beautiful, thriving city.
