About San Jose, CA
San Jose, California was the first civilian settlement to exist in the state, and it was also the first state capital. As the oldest city in CA, this city also grew to be the largest and most populated city in Northern California and the tenth largest city in the US. The original full name of the city is El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe. The land was originally inhabited by the Ohlone Indians who were attracted to the water supply from the Guadalupe River. However, in the year 1777, the first official settlers were the Spanish, who gave it its name in honor of Saint Joseph. In fact, it wasn’t until the year 1840 that the Americans arrived due to the possibilities they thought the land had to offer.

Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph
This Roman Catholic Church located in Downtown San Jose was the first church built in the city in the year 1803. The original structure was heavily damaged in 1818 by earthquakes, however, it still remains to be a favorite part of the city that offers great history.

The circle of Palms is unique to California’s first state capitol that was built in 1849. This structure is a group of large palm trees that encircle the California State Seal.
The Hayes Mansion is an extremely charming and old building that is one of the only original buildings still standing. This building was a Spanish Colonial manor that was home to a Spanish settler from the late 1700's. The building has since then been renovated and turned into a luxurious hotel.
