Cape Coral, FL and Its Fascinating History

Before Development in Cape Coral, FL
Before the city was developed, the land was used by loggers, cattlemen, homesteaders, professional fishermen, and sportsman. It is fascinating to note that the area was simply known as ‘the other side of the river,’ before it was developed. Cape Coral was one of the region’s biggest centers in the truck farming industry.
The days on the homestead consisted of plucking chickens, planting gardens, plumbing palmettos, riding horses and enjoying the creek. Many homesteaders helped to build bridges and roads, and also donated property for schools and cleared pastures for the establishment of citrus groves.
Cape Coral, Florida is located on the Gulf of Mexico. The actual city was founded in the year 1957. The town was founded by two brothers from Baltimore, Maryland. The brothers were real estate developers and purchased a 103-square mile area known as Redfish Point.
By the next year, the two began development of the pre-planned community for the city of Cape Coral. The first building in the city was the offices of the Rosen brothers; this was constructed before any houses were built. The first permanent resident of the city was the Rosen’s general manager, Kenny Shwartz.
The Gulf American Land Corporation
This corporation was begun to help develop the area of the city. Streets were being paved, canals were dug, and businesses and houses were being built. Cape Coral became a city in Florida that was promoted like no other town around the state. Many celebrities were brought in to hype up the benefits of living on ‘the Cape’, as it was becoming known locally. Throughout the 1960s, development continued, mainly on Redfish Point.
At this time the population was 2,850 residents. During the 1960s, a golf course, public yacht club, shopping center, and medical clinic were all up and running in the city. The major addition to the city in this decade was the Cape Coral Bridge, which crossed the Caloosahatchee River, and made the trip to Fort Myers much quicker.
Modern Day Cape Coral
The city became incorporated in 1970 when its population was growing rapidly. By 2016 Cape Coral, Florida was number nine in the best places to retire. The climate is tropical and averages three hundred fifty-five days of sunshine a year, but one hundred forty-five of those days see measurable precipitation. The summers are very humid, warm and rainy, and the winters are dry and moderate.
The city is the eleventh largest in Florida and sixty percent of the population is between the ages of 15-64. The young population is the largest growing group in the city, and is growing faster than in any city in the United States. Cape Coral is fourteen miles from an international airport, and is also served by a general aviation airport in Fort Meyers.
The major economy in the city is health care services, real estate and retail. The city has an economic development office that encourages and gives incentives for businesses to relocate to the area.
