This city is home to the 2002 Super Bowl Champions, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or “the Bucs” for short. This team joined the National Football League in 1976 and is currently playing under head coach Dirk Koetter. They have won one Super Bowl in 2002 under head coach Jon Gruden at Qualcomm Stadium against the Oakland Raiders.
Their home stadium, the Raymond James Stadium, was given the honor of being FOX Sports’ pick for the National Football League’s (NFL) best stadium to attend a game in.
In addition to the Buccaneers, this city also has an arena football team, Storm, which plays in the Arena Football League (AFL). The Storm came to this city from Pittsburgh in 1991 and have remained ever since. The team is currently owned by Jeffrey Vinik, who is also the owner of the Lightning. The current coach of Storm is Ron James, who this year won the AFL Coach of the Year award.
The Tampa Bay Lightning, who took home the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Stanley Cup in 2004, make their home in the Amalie Arena. This arena hosts hundreds of events every year including ice hockey, basketball, concerts, and arena football. Nicknamed “the Bolts,” the Lightning has been around since 1992. They are currently in their fifth year of being coached by the legendary Joe Cooper.
One of the most impressive professional sports located in this area is baseball. This city is host to several major and minor league teams, as well as an impressive variety of university teams.
With Steinbrenner field hosting the famous New York Yankees for spring training every year as well as the Florida State League Tampa Yankees, and the Tampa Bay Rays (formerly “Devil Rays”) at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, baseball is definitely prevalent in this exciting city.
