Lynn, MA and Its History
Lynn, MA is the largest city in its county and is in the ten largest municipalities in the state. It’s located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and is only 10 miles away from Boston’s downtown area. The city is actually considered to be a part of Greater Boston’s urban inner core. Lynn, MA is commonly known as the “City of Sin” by residents of the city and nearby as it has a history of vice and crime.
Nowadays, it is more recognized for its diverse population, loft-style apartments, downtown cultural district, public parks, and historic architecture.
The Settlement in the 17th century Lynn, MA
Before the Europeans colonized the area, the area that would become the town was home to the Naumkeag tribe. It was in 1629 that European settlement began, which was not that long after a certain boat arrived at Plymouth.
The first settlers in the area were Edmund Ingalls and John Tarbox. The town was incorporated in 1631 under the name Saugus. In 1850, the city was incorporated as Lynn. The name was taken as a homage to King’s Lynn, Norfolk, England to honor Samuel Whiting.
Lynn during the colonial days was a hub for shoe-making and tannery. The boots that were worn by soldiers in the Continental Army who fought in the Revolutionary War were made in this Massachusetts city. Making shoes drove the growth of the city through the eighteenth century into the early nineteenth century.
Development in the 19th century
It was in the middle part of the nineteenth century that beach cottages and other estates were built along the shoreline as the Atlantic coast became a popular spot for summer retreats. A lot of these building are now a part of the National Register-listed Diamond Historic District.
Further away from the coast, industrial activity seriously expanded in in Lynn. A considerable amount of corporate buildings and manufacturers moved in. Among them was an early electric company that would combine with Edison Electric Company in 1892 to form General Electric.
The General Electric plant began with the production of arc lights, meters, and electric motors. They started expanding their products during World War II, most notably with aircraft engines. The jet engine plant built resulted in improvements in efficiency and power. The plant remains in Lynn to this day.
Expanding Lynn, MA
Immigration to Lynn, Massachusetts increased dramatically during the very early part of the 20th century. Jewish people from Eastern Europe made up the largest group of people. A bunch of people also came from Cambodia to settle in the area.
During the early 1980s, the city suffered through several major fires. One engulfed several factories that made shoes and the property damage totaled was a few million dollars.
It was also during this time that the city got its reputation for vice and crime. In response to their growing reputation, the city launched an initiative called “City of Firsts” in the 90s to try to shift the focus on what they’ve achieved. Some of these highlighted how the city was the birthplace of the American jet engine, the first dance academy, and the roast beef sandwich.
The early 2000s brought about a period of renovation period and reconstruction of downtown historic structures that revitalized the city. These projects are still being worked on today. This city in Massachusetts is trying to embrace its history while bringing art, culture, and science to its residents and visitors.
