Local Sports Teams in Syracuse, NY
Once the main city of the state of New York, Syracuse is still thriving and full of life.
The landscape and culture of the city has changed much over its near 2 centuries of life, and that includes its sports life as well. Once home to the NBA Champions, the Syracuse Nats, the city continues to have a thriving sports life.
The city is home to quite of New York State’s beloved top-division minor league professional clubs as well as NCAA college teams. In fact, it is a top-division minor league city and a pretty intense college sports town. Despite only having one major league professional group, there is no doubt that the sports culture is a dominant one.
Syracuse’s leagues, whether collegiate or minor league, have avid fans that make the sports community a fun one to be a part of, and no true sports fan will ever feel like they’re missing out when in the area.
The Chiefs Baseball Organization in Syracuse, NY
Among the most beloved of the city’s professional groups is their Minor League Baseball team, the Syracuse Chiefs.
The Chiefs are a Triple-A affiliate recently purchased by the New York Mets MLB organization. Prior to being an affiliate for the Mets, they were the top-level AAA affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
Besides competing at the minor league level and operating as an affiliate team for the New York Mets, the Chiefs also compete in the International League, bringing a unique level of competition and fandom to the area.
The organization has had a long and successful history, with the current club birthed in 1961. During its time, the team has competed in 17 championship series playoffs.
Their home stadium, the NBT Bank Stadium, is located on the northside of the city.
Another successful and vibrant minor league is the Syracuse Crunch, an AHL (American Hockey League) team.
The team originated in 1992 as Hamilton Canucks, but they moved to Syracuse, NY and became the Crunch in 1994.
They have been an affiliate team for the Vancouver Canucks, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Columbus Blue Jackets, Anaheim Ducks, and are currently the affiliate development team for the Tampa Bay Lightning, the current leaders in the 2017 NHL season.
As an AHL team, the Crunch have been incredibly successful and especially popular in the community. They had back-to-back sellout seasons in ’96 and ’97, and in recent years they have made it all the way to the Calder Cup Finals on two occasions.
The Silver Knights Major Arena Soccer Organization
The city is also home to one major league sports organization, the Syracuse Silver Knights, a Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) team.
Formed in 2010, they started out in the Major Indoor Soccer League. They made the switch to the MASL in the 2013-2014 season.
This group is quite competitive, finishing 2nd in their division for the past few seasons straight.
Syracuse University Orange: NCAA Division I Teams
For those more interested in collegiate level sports, the Syracuse University Orange is an NCAA Division I school with a surprising number of Division I men’s and women’s teams, including basketball, football, soccer, lacrosse and ice hockey.
For many in the city, the collegiate sports draw the most enthusiasm, but whether professional, collegiate, or all of the above is your thing, you’ll have plenty of teams and seasons to keep you busy all year.
