Sports Teams in Rochester, NY
The city of Rochester is home to a variety of sports teams. The city has actually received honors for being the top city for minor league sports. It’s also been ranked fifth in a list for the best sports town by a prominent magazine. In 2007, Golf Magazine has also deemed it the tenth best city to golf in.
The Buffalo Bills of the American Football League have their summer training in one of the suburbs of Rochester, NY. The Buffalo Sabres, who are a hockey club in the National Hockey League, also have ties to the city. These professional sports teams aren’t the only sport’s ties that Rochester has though.
The Rochester Red Wings and the Americans
The Red Wings and the Americans are the city’s first two professional sports clubs.
The Red Wings are a baseball team in the minor leagues. They play in the International League and are affiliated with the Minnesota Twins. The franchise was founded in 1899, making it one of the oldest continuously operating sports teams in North American history when counting athletics in the major league. Their former affiliates include the St. Louis Cardinals and the Baltimore Orioles. They’ve been the Twins top affiliate since 2002.
They hold the record for the longest professional baseball game with the Pawtucket Red Sox. Their game together lasted 33 innings and 8 hours, 25 minutes and was played over the course of three days. The Red Wings currently play at Frontier Field.
The Rochester Americans are an ice hockey club that competes in the American Hockey League. They are affiliated with the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones and the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres (one of the three NHL hockey clubs located in New York).
The Americans, nicknamed the Amerks, are the fourth oldest franchise in the American Hockey League. They also are one of the longest continuously tenure among the AHL, second only to the Hershey Bears.
This NY city was given a new franchise in 1956 when the Pittsburgh Hornets suspended their operations due to their stadium’s demolition. The hockey club has won six Calder Cups and has made it to the playoffs sixteen times. They play at the Blue Cross Arena.
The Rochester Knighthawks
The city gained a new kind of sport in 1995 with the creation of the Rochester Knighthawks. The Knighthawks are a box lacrosse club that plays at the professional level in the National Lacrosse League. In their first two years, they played in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League but began playing in the National Lacrosse League in 1998 when the MILL was reconstituted as the NLL.
The Knighthawks hold the record for the most playoffs reached consecutively; they made it to the playoffs 13 seasons in a row. They are also the first club to win the championship three years in a row. The owner of the Knighthawks Curt Styres was the former owner of the Rochester Americans. They play at Connor & Ferris Field at the Blue Cross Arena.
The Rhinos and The RazorSharks
The Rhinos are an American soccer team that plays in Rochester, NY. They were founded in 1996 and play in the United Soccer League. They were formerly known as the Rochester Raging Rhinos but changed their name at the start of the 2008 season. They play their home games at Capelli Sport Stadium but are on hiatus for the 2018 season as they are seeking additional funding.
The RazorSharks are a basketball team that plays professionally and are members of the NAPB. The club was formed in 2005 as apart of the American Basketball Association but only stayed there for two years before becoming on the founding teams of the Premier Basketball League. They hold eight championship titles and play in the Blue Cross Arena.
