A Brief History of Cedar Park, TX
In Texas, Cedar Park is one of the fastest growing cities in its area. With thriving businesses and residents that are friendly, there is a lot of appeal to the city. The tourist spots and entertainment around the city make Cedar Park, TX a hot vacation spot. The city wasn’t always such a thriving metropolis though. Here’s a brief history of how this small city in Texas came to be.
Cedar Park, TX Before Settlement
Like so many other Texas towns before it, Cedar Park was home to a variety of Native American tribes before settlers disrupted their way of life in the 19th century. The tribes around the area included the Lipan Apache, the Comanche, and the Tonkawa. Evidence showed that suggested these tribes had been in the area since somewhere around 5000 BCE. They lived undisturbed in the area until 1873 when Harriet and George Cluck bought over 300 acres of the land. They started a ranch and it became the core of what would one day become the community that would be the basis of the city.
Beginnings of the Town
It would be ten years before the railroad would make its way through the small town. The railroad that did arrive was the Austin and Northwestern Railroad. This railroad connected the cities of Lampasas and Burnet to the state capitol and was finished in 1882 after passing through the area. At this point, the community that would become Cedar Park, TX was known as Bruggerhoff, which was the name of an official with the railroad company. It’s said that the name was not liked by the residents of the area because it was hard to pronounce and spell. It was five years later that Emmett Cluck, the son of Harriet and George, changed the name of the area to Cedar Park. A park was built in 1892 that would draw the residents of Austin in for day trips.
Changes in the Not So Distant Past
It’s hard to believe but there was little change in the city from the time of its name change until the 1950's. It was during the 50's and 60's that housing subdivisions were being built as the nearby city of Austin was experiencing growth and people needed a place to settle. It was on February 24 in 1973 that the residents of the soon to be city voted to incorporate. The approximate population at the time was 1,765 and they didn’t even have a library yet (that was built in ‘78).
Big retail names began making their way into the city in the early 2000's. Big names including Super Target, Walmart, Academy Sports and Outdoors, multiple HEB grocery stores, Whole Foods, Costco, Randalls, and Sprouts Farmers Market. Major shopping centers also were built and opened including 1890 Ranch, The Parke, the Cypress Creek Shopping Center, and Cedar Park Town Center. It was also in the 2000's that the first major medical center was opened.
The Present and Future of Cedar Park, TX
The small city in Texas experienced a big boom from when it was incorporated as a city to recent times. The city continues to grow and thrive today and into the future.
