Timeline - 19th Century in Tyler, TX
Tyler was created as a community on April 11, 1846 by the Texas Legislature. The community was named for the tenth US president, John Tyler. It was established at the same time as Smith County, and then designated as the county seat. The population grew quickly and so the community was incorporated as a town in 1850 with over 4,000 residents.
One year later, the Tyler Telegraph local newspaper began production. As the community continued to grow, the Tyler Tap Railroad was built in 1877 (this railroad was renamed and has evolved throughout its lifetime, eventually becoming the St. Louis Southwestern Railway). This greatly aided the ease of transportation for the area. The railroad became a key feature in the town’s local economy; commerce was able to grow and cotton became the main commercial crop and more banks began to pop up.
By the end of the 19th century, the town had organized a public school system and founded Texas College. Thanks to the popular railroad and commerce, the city became a major commercial center for East Texas and has continued to hold on to that reputation.
