Atascocita, TX and Its Fascinating History
Atascocita, TX is an area known as a census-designated place in which nearly 70,000 people currently reside. So it is not exactly a town or a city, but the census does recognize it as a specific independent area. It is located just east of Humble and northeast of Houston. The area was annexed by the city of Houston in the 1960’s but then returned to autonomy in the 1970’s. The 1970’s was when immense construction began to take place and the contemporary area really began to take shape. The development began to explode; containing fifteen neighborhoods, it was named one of the fastest growing developments in the Houston area in the 1990’s.
What does Atascocita mean?
Atascocita is a word of Spanish origin that means soft, boggy, water-laden lands. Lake Houston is nearby offering a plethora of water-based activities making the name fit quite nicely. The San Jacinto River and Spring Creek are also nearby further adding to the water-based offerings and breath-taking views of this area.
The area bears this name because of an old Spanish road with the same that that was constructed in the 18th or possibly the 17th century. It is believed this road was built by Alonzo DeLeon. This road was used as a military through-way by the Spanish in its heyday and by cattle drivers in Texas bringing their steers to market in New Orleans as time went on. Throughout history, it has been a successful and important trading route. By 1820 it became the most used road in Texas. The position of this road is still used today, now known as FM 1960. Atascocita was also a Spanish settlement and outpost on the Trinity River; currently Liberty, Texas; not terribly far from where the town Atascocita is today.
The Town Today
This Texas town is a residential oasis for many families. It is quiet and peaceful yet not isolated because of its close proximity to the bustling city of Houston. It is a respite from city life without being totally removed. The area offers a plethora of businesses, services, and schools as well as a volunteer fire department and a library. The Harris County Sheriff's Department provides policing services to the area. This suburban getaway also hosts several country clubs and golf courses which are enjoyed by both residents and visitors alike. Lone Star College has an Atascocita center for higher education that serves the area well.
In 2010 the population was 30% children under the age of 18 and 35% adults between the ages of 25 and 44, making this area of Texas the perfect place for young families to settle down and grow. The median home price is only $153,000 making it quite an affordable place to live as well compared to a significant portion of the rest of the country.
