Five Surprising Facts About Arlington, TX
Many folks from around the U.S. have definitely heard of the Dallas Cowboys, and have probably heard of or been to a Six Flags theme park, eaten nachos at a ball park, and maybe even watched a bowling tournament on TV.
But what most folks don’t know is what all of these things have in common: they are all in and originate from Arlington, Texas!
While Arlington, TX is home to many famous destinations, major league sports teams, and events, most people aren’t familiar with the city itself.
So, to help educate you on this amazing city, here are five surprising facts in just 500 words:
1. Arlington is Home to the Dallas Cowboys.
Most assume that the Dallas Cowboys are from Dallas, TX. However, that is not the case. In 2009, after the completion of the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, the Dallas Cowboys moved in and are about to kick off their 9th season there.
2. The AT&T Stadium Is World-Record Breaking.
The AT&T Stadium (as mentioned above, now houses the Dallas Cowboys) broke many world records, mostly all due to its enormous size.
It is the largest domed structure in the world with the tallest architectural arches of any other structure. The building is in fact so tall that the entire Statue of Liberty could fit inside of it erect and still have close to 20 ft. to spare before hitting the ceiling.
The stadium also houses the largest sliding glass doors and the biggest HDTV video board in the world as well.
3. Arlington is Home to the First Six Flags Theme Park.
While people from around the world have heard of Six Flags, and many in the U.S. and in Texas, for that matter, have gone, most don’t know that Six Flags originated in Arlington, TX itself.
Named for the six separate nations to which Texas had belonged throughout its history (Spain, France, Mexico, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, and the United States) construction of the theme park began in 1960 and opened in 1961. There are now 16 in the U.S. and many more throughout North America and the World.
Six Flags Over Texas was also the first theme park to begin offering live entertainment in the form of Broadway-style shows, and happens to be home to the world’s tallest swing carousel, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
4. Ballpark Nachos were First Created and Sold in Arlington, TX
We’ve almost all at least seen them, if not partaken of them – the famous ballpark fare: nachos.
But few know that they originated in Arlington! Before the Texas Rangers moved to their current home at the Globe Life Park, they resided in the Arlington Stadium, which is where ballpark nachos were first sold in 1976!
5. Arlington is the International Home of Bowling.
This city is the center for international bowling. It houses the U.S. Bowling Congress, the Bowling Proprietors Association of America, the International Bowling Museum & Hall of Fame and the Bowling International Training & Research Center.
Even if you’re not a bowling fan (and had no idea that there was a Bowling Congress), this final fun fact is pretty impressive!
