Most might assume that just because Midland is a small city compared to some of the massive ones located in Texas that it doesn’t have an interesting and diverse athletic culture, but those people would actually be wrong. Although the city is relatively small, they have an interesting array of sports teams and a fierce fan base for their local organizations. The Rockhounds, Baseball Midland, TX
The Rockhounds play minor league baseball and they are the most followed sports team in the city. They have been around since the mid 1970’s, and in that time have won numerous Texas League championships, making them a central focus for the city. In 2007, they won the highest honor for a franchise in minor league baseball, the John H. Johnson President’s Award, making them only the third in Texas to do so. As the city’s biggest sports team, they have a large fan base and the whole community comes root for them to win. They play out of the Security Bank Ballpark and average around 250,000 fans a season.
West Texas Drillers, Indoor Football
The West Texas Drillers are a seriously impressive minor league football team based in Midland/Odessa. Their list of awards and accolades are a mile long, including player Michael Heetland’s 2016 admission to the Minor League Football Hall of Fame, and being crowned the 2014 SAFL champion. The West Texas Drillers have earned their name and taken western Texas by storm right out of the gate. They have never lost more than 3 or won less than 10 games in a single season. With their impressive track record, it’s no wonder that they have such a strong fan base with the residents of Midland.
The Jackalopes, Hockey in TX
Although technically based in the small neighboring city of Odessa, Midland also claims the Jackalopes to be their local hockey group. You might think that hockey is a strange sport to be played in such a hot state, and this may be true, but the Jackalopes are doing great. They are a second tier junior ice hockey team that plays as a part of the NAHL. With local sponsorships and community events, the Jackalopes really work to bring locals together to enjoy watching hockey. Although they aren’t necessarily the most consistent when it comes to winning, they are definitely consistently enjoyable to watch play, and bring a unique sport to western Texas.
