Lubbock, TX loves their sports. They do not have any professional sports organizations that exist outside of minor leagues and local schools. The local sports culture centers around the local University, Texas Tech. From football to basketball and many other varsity sports, here is a list of some of the most prominent sports teams based out of Lubbock.
Texas Tech Red Raiders Football
If there is one local Lubbock sports organization that citizens love to rally around it is the Texas Tech Red Raiders. They are one of the 12 in the Big 12 Conference in Division I Football, and since their establishment in 1925, they have won 11 conference titles. A couple of ex-pro-football players got their start with Texas Tech football like 49ers David Parks, The Chiefs E.J Holub, and Donny Anderson of the Packers. All their jersey numbers have been retired. They have a long-standing rivalry with Texas A&M that won’t be solved anytime soon. But in the meantime, the locals and visitors can watch a game at the Red Raiders home field, Jones AT&T Stadium.
Texas Tech Red Raiders Basketball
Sharing the same name as many teams at Texas Tech, the Red Raiders Basketball is a NCAA Division I team out of Lubbock. Established in 1925, they’ve made their 15th NCAA Tournament appearance since then in 2016 under their head coach of the time Tubby Smith. They didn’t leave as champs; however, they are still playing at the height of their abilities and maybe the new head coach coming in could help the team make it to the conference finals once again.
One of only a few Texas Tech teams that don’t hold the Red Raiders name; The Lady Raiders are stars in women’s basketball who have the United Spirit Arena as their home court. They are a NCAA Division I group that competes in the Big 12 Conference. Established in 1975, they won their first Division tournament in 1993, however since former player Candance Whitaker took the mantle as their new head coach back in 2013 they have had some struggles making another appearance in the NCAA tournament. But who knows what the future may hold for the team.
This is a baseball team not associated with Texas Tech University. They are a minor league baseball team based out of Lubbock City park. They’ve had a shaky history since being established back in 1922. They’ve traded leagues four times up until 1956. However, no matter which league they were in, they managed to take home championships on multiple occasions. In 1934 The Hubbers were finally recognized as being 1 of the 100-greatest minor league baseball teams in history. As of today, they are a part of the Pecos League and have an active schedule. They are actively looking for new members to recruit. Lubbock also has a variety of little league. In 2007 the Lubbock Western All-Stars reached 3rd place in the Little League World Series.
