Sports Teams and Organizations in Laredo, TX
Laredo, TX is home to several sports teams that have mostly been established in the past 5 years, all except for the highly successful Laredo Heat. However, very little has been heard from the Heat in the past year and very little is known about when they will return to the field. Many of the teams based out of the city are small and relatively new. Most of them have unclear futures when it comes to their positions in their respective leagues and if they will continue to operate or if they’ll close down for good. Here is a little more insight on the sports organizations coming out of this Texas city.
We at SaveOnPaving.com think the Laredo Heat is the best-known sports team coming out of the city. They are a part of the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League (PDL) with a home field located at Texas A&M International University. They have been gracing the field since 2004 and have played in some major conferences like the Southern Conference for the Mid-South Division in 2006. They were the runner-up for the 2006 Southern Conference but sadly they didn’t make it past the Open Cup’s first round. But despite that, the following year they won their first PDL. They took a hiatus back in 2016 and there is still no word on when they’ll be back on the field.
The Swarm is a relatively new professional basketball team apart of the ABA league. They started playing in the city’s Energy Arena back in 2015. They have yet to make any big splashes in the world of basketball, but don’t discredit them just yet, if they are anything like the Heat, they’ll need a couple more years to create a name for themselves.
The Honey Badgers were also relatively new to the world of sports. Establishing themselves in April of 2013, this is a professional indoor soccer group with a home field at the Laredo Energy Arena. They were set to make a grand entrance into the world of Laredo sports in 2014, however financial burden on the team’s owner eventually caused the cancellation of the launch and the Honey Badgers disbanded before they were ever officially started.
Also, new to the city’s sports line-up is the Lemurs. This is a professional baseball team that was started back in 2012. Though they’ve made it through the South Division of the American Association in 2012, they were later eliminated from the playoffs. There is talk of the Lemurs being replaced but only time will tell what awaits the future of this team.
The Roses are a professional women’s football team a part of the Sugar N Spice League out of South Texas. They were also established in 2012 with the Uni-Trade Stadium as their home field. Little word has been heard from this team and it is unclear when they’ll take the field again.
