The McAllen-Reynosa area has a D-league NBA team and a pro soccer team as well as a huge stadium and arena. While there used to be a higher number of professional sports in the Rio Grande Valley area, there are still a few quality teams for sports fanatics to support.
The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros in McAllen, TX
The Rio Grande Valley Football Club Toros are a pro soccer organization out of Edinburg, Texas, just 20 minutes north. The Toros are run by the Lone Star, LLC and are part of the United Soccer League as of the 2016 season. Lone Star also owns the area’s local D-league basketball team.
The Toros serve as an affiliate of the Houston Dynamo. This relationship means that the Toros players are picked and coached by the Dynamo, while Lone Star is still responsible for the day-to-day operations and paperwork. Being in the USL puts the Toros in the strongest men’s professional league below Major League Soccer.
A new team, the Toros picked their first player, Juan Flores, in 2015. Their home games take place in the H-E-B Park complex, which was just recently finished in early 2017. In their nascent stage, the Toros are still making a name for itself in the league.
The Rio Grande Valley Vipers in TX
The Vipers have been the most successful NBA D-league since 2006. During their third season in 2009, the Vipers became affiliated with the Houston Rockets, with the Rockets controlling operations. This led to the Vipers’ most successful year, making it to the playoffs and winning the championship.
Again in 2013, the Vipers won the championship title. One of their players won the D-league’s MVP award and was promoted to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Their home stadium, the Bert Ogden Arena, was constructed in 2015 in Edinburg to be ready for the Vipers’ tenth season in 2016. The newly built arena houses over 8,000 people.
High School Sports in TX
McAllen High School has all kinds of sports teams, from football and basketball to soccer, swimming, and much more. The McAllen Bulldogs football team is 1-2 overall and has a national rank of 10928. They play at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium, which is also used by college football and soccer games. It serves as the home stadium for other high schools besides McAllen High School as well. James Rowe High School and McAllen Memorial High School also utilize the stadium. Memorial Stadium is the largest stadium in the area, with a capacity of over 13,000.For a brief period between 1981 and 1985; the stadium even hosted the NCAA Division 2 Football Championship.
