Collegiate Sports in Victoria, TX
The UHV Jaguars, aka the University of Houston in Victoria, play several different sports as part of the Red River Athletic Conference, which is part of the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics). The teams first began playing in 2008 and since then have been quite successful and nationally ranked. In baseball, the UHV Jaguars finished their first season with a national ranking of 31, and in softball, the Jaguars completed their first season with a national ranking of 15. In 2010, the baseball UHV Jaguars were just shy of advancing to the NAIA World Series. In 2010-2011 the school added men’s and women’s golf and soccer clubs.
There is also the Texas Collegiate League which is a baseball league that operates in the summer with teams of college students from Texas and Louisiana. Sixty games are played in a season with games being played every day of the week except Monday. The Victoria Generals play for this league from Riverside Stadium which has a capacity of 4000 people. This league is set up very similarly to that of minor league baseball, giving college students a taste of what their post-college baseball careers may be like.
Victoria, Texas is home to a semi-professional football team by the name of the Victoria Hurricanes. The original team name was the Texans, but once the team moved to Victoria they changed it to the Hurricanes. They play at Patti Welder Stadium in the center of Victoria to up to 3000 fans. The team’s preseason begins in November with the regular season running February through April and the post-season continuing until June. They play as part of the Crossroads Amateur Football League and were the champions this past year winning CRAFL Bowl VII. They played a phenomenal undefeated season this past year and are expected to do well again this coming spring.
Recreational Sports in Victoria, TX
The Victoria Park and Recreation Department hosts a variety of athletic leagues throughout the year for both children and adults. The city offers both an adult and a youth sport complex. For youth, there are softball leagues and for adults, they offer 4v4 sand volleyball, softball, and kickball. The parks and recreation department also hosts many activities that are active and fun for the whole family. There are also two splash pads to help families cool off from the scorching Texas heat.
