The Top 4 Reasons Why We Love Killeen, TX
The concept that not all that is gold glitters can be applied to cities as much as to anything else. It certainly rings true for the small city of Killeen, Texas, where a remnant charm of the old west remains in what is now a busy military town.
For being a fairly small city, Killeen, TX certainly does have a lot going for it. Its history, its community, its energy, as well as its convenient nearness to some true Texas icons give us many reasons to love it.
Unfortunately, this old western town is too often overlooked. So, to help bring it some much deserved attention, we at SaveOnPaving.com want to share with you at least 4 reasons why we love the little Texas city of Killeen.
1. Rich History in Killeen
The area that is now Killeen began as nothing more than some large families living off the land in a few different farming communities.
Then, in the 1880s, the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway delved into central Texas and purchased over 350 acres just southwest of one of the bigger farming communities. The railway built its station, and that is when and where the city of Killeen began, as a true, old fashioned western town.
Shortly after the railway passed through, a saloon, general stores and hotel all popped up. Hundreds of people moved into the area, and soon a genuine western town like those you see in the movies came into existence.
The town experienced a complete reconstruction in the 1940’s when it played the important role of becoming home to Fort Hood during World War II. The then Camp Hood displaced over 300 families from their land, and the efforts brought in literally thousands of newcomers overnight. The mark it left on the town is still there to this day with the continuing presence of the Fort and modern day military families and economy.
But, despite all of the changes, the Downtown Historic District as well as the old Killeen High School, still retains much of the old western charm and architecture. So much so that both were awarded listing on the National Register of Historic Places for their architectural as well as historical significance.
2. Old Western Small Town Architecture and Feel
Despite the many phases and periods its seen, Killeen has still retained much of its western feel, which is one of the other things we love about it.
Part of what contributes to this is the remaining architecture of the Historic District, all of which was completed between 1895 and 1960. The architecture ranges from Romanesque Revival of the late 19th century, to stone and brick of the early 20th century, to modern, postwar styles. In many ways, the town’s story is writ in its brick and mortar.
And though the town has grown significantly in its population, it is still home to only 140 thousand or so, allowing it to maintain a tighter knit community and old town feel.
3. Plenty To Do in TX
It may be small, but there is still plenty to do. The city has an active Parks & Recreation Department and includes a community center, family recreation center, aquatics center, and more.
In addition to a thriving athletic community, the city has enough parks and activities available to keep any family busy, including families with fur babies. There is Long Branch Park that encompasses 66 acres of land full of playgrounds, sports fields, a spray ground, and more.
For those who prefer water activities nearby Stillhouse Hollow Lake provides amazing fishing opportunities with its largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and white and smallmouth bass.
And for those wanting more rugged adventures, they can head over to Dana Peak Park on the banks of Stillhouse Hollow Lake. The park includes campgrounds, hiking, biking, hunting, water sports, and horseback riding.
Needless to say, the list of things to do is near endless.
4. Still Near A Famous Large City
Finally, while we love the cozy, small town feel, we love that Killeen is also near one of Texas’ largest and most famous destinations – Austin.
Only an hour drive away, Austin can provide the buzz, energy and culture of big city life when you are in the mood. So with Killeen, you can enjoy small town living in reach of big city pleasure.
