The First Settlers
McKinney, a city inside Collin County, was first settled by a group of pioneers. In fact, the land of Collin County was supposedly offered for free by William S. Peters. This area of land was first called “Peter’s Colony” in 1841, where they offered 640 acres of land and helped build a cabin. The settlers shortly arrived to their new lands in Peter’s Colony, arriving with the hope of a better life and freedom. However, many of these settlers left because they found the fertile land to be too hard, making it difficult to live on. But the ones who stayed established farms and communities.
McKinney’s First Establishments
In 1846, Collin County was named after Collin McKinney, a pioneer and one of the land surveyors who assisted with the draft. He gave Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico his signature in 1836, and the town became the seat of Collin County. The very first establishment in the city was a home, and then shortly after a church was built in April 1848, and a residential building called the LoveJoy Store. The town’s population grew slowly, mainly because of the hard soil. Then in 1872 the Houston and Texas Central Railroad brought in reliable transportation, which then brought a surprising amount of growth to the town.
Throughout the next 50 years, cotton was now the major source of revenue, and a large cotton gin was built in the city (shortly four more built). McKinney was also known for producing corn, oats and wheat. This made Collin County one of the top producers in Texas at the time.
Becoming a City
In 1866, the prosperity in McKinney was flourishing. This time called for new courthouses, larger and more homes, and a jail. At this time, they were experiencing a booming economy that led to an increase in population, better facilities, and more and more homes. Around 1885 they now had an opera house, newspapers, flour mills, banks, and churches for their 2,000 residents.
